It is called parthenogenesis (derived from a greek meaning 'virgin birth'), where a single cell (i.e. an egg) starts to develop into a foetus without being fertilised by a male - it is a type of asexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction requires two cells to come together by fertilisation before a foetus (baby) can start to develop. Parthenogenesis is rare in birds, but does happen in insects. It is also not a good way of continuing the species since the resulting turkey poult (chick) is usually infertile and unable to reproduce at all - or lay eggs. A bit like a seedless grape cannot be used to grow a new vine!
