Introduced in 1970, the polar bear-shaped license plates have become a staple for car owners in Canada's Northwest Territories.
Over 40 years later, the polar bear design, which is a registered trademark of the Northwest Territories government, has pretty much retained its design and popularity, but a landscape background (pictured in the header image) adorns the newer plates.
The plates can be used on both cars and motorcycles.
The Canadian territory of Nunavut, which split from the Northwest Territories in 1999, discontinued the polar bear license plates in 2011 and replaced it with a rectangular design in 2012.
