I am from Singapore, and let me correct this: Singapore was originally named Singapura, where Singa means "lion" and Pura means "pretend". So unfortunately, our founder who named this country, saw an animal that looked like a lion. Perhaps he saw a tiger, cos there were no lions in Southeast Asia at that time.

hhhhjjjkkkklll you didn't study Social Studies? Sang Nila Utama thought he saw a animal on this island and he asked his chief minister what that was. So he said Singa(Lion in malay) and they named it Singapura. There's more, the storm, etc. Yes Tamil is my 2nd language, and Singam is lion in tamil. But singa is malay. Before this, our country was called Temasek(Sea town[i dont know what language that came from i forgot])
