Taiwan Offers Free Wi-Fi to Citizens and Tourists

Taiwan became the first country in the world to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity to its citizens and all its foreign tourists.

East Asia is a booming technological hub and the small island country of Taiwan is no exception thanks to a government scheme that offers everyone free access to Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

Called iTaiwan, the service was launched in 2011 and has grown to incorporate thousands of hotspots. The service runs at a humble 1 MBPS.

Citizens can register by simply entering their mobile phone number.

In 2013, the service was opened to all foreign tourists in a move that'll win a lot of goodwill.

Foreign users are required to have an account with the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, which can easily be acquired by visiting a local Tourism Bureau center with a valid passport.
