I think that's in-correct. i think the Europeans back in the day before they knew the sun would come back at the change of season's would build large fires to try and bring the sun 's heat back to the planet. The symbolic placing of lights on the tree are remnants of that old belief that we (or some) still practice today.

I'm jewish and yes, I have a Christmas tree in my household.

I would say it is somewhat bigoted to call this an identity crisis. Chirstmas is (by US law) a secular holiday, not a religious holiday. Both the holiday and the traditions predate the Christian religion.

I'm Atheist and I have a Christmas tree and a Menorah. I also celebrate the Solstice. Because I like to celebrate and have fun. I like my children to learn about all people and to be inclusive and loving and understanding to everyone. Learning about someone else's beliefs never hurt anyone.
