People think the world will 'end' because Earth, the Sun, and the center of the Milky Way will align. Nobody bothers to day that this happens every year on December 21st. If the world does end, pure coincidence. Plus, the Mayans has 'ages' of 'eras' ie. "The Age of the Jaguar," etc. It's completley possible that the calendar ended at the beginning of a new age, not the end of the world.
