It is believed that sitting before a trip brings you a safe journey.. similar to a moment of silence

They are not supposed to sit down on a luggage. Before traveling, the whole family or everyone in the house is supposed to take a seat, for safe journey.

This was made because it was bad luck to go back home to get anything you forgot. They sat down (not necessarily their luggage) to remember anything that needs to be taken so they woulnd't have to return.

I'm Russian, and this fact needs to be corrected -- just a little bit. Before traveling a person should sit down with his family and friends in silence in order to have a safe trip. You can sit on your luggage or anywhere else, just as long as you have a moment of silence with your family, including friends.
