It can vary a lot, but $16,000 is certainly in the ball park. Vet bills, grooming bills, supplies and food all add up. The page linked to below has a fairly detailed breakdown. For a 14 year old dog, he puts the low end at $4,242, said that it's cost him personally $12,468, and can get as high as $38,905.
