you need a sun to see a rainbow so obviously you can only see it when the sun is out , not at night time

You do need sunlight for a rainbow to occur. But it doesn't have to be direct sunlight. Moonbows (lunar rainbows) are produced from the reflection of sunlight off of the moon.But..the colors are more difficult for our eyes to see, so they often appear white or gray. So yes, rainbows occur at night in a sense, but they aren't called rainbows

Maybe because of the position of the sun, at middle of the day the sun is almost at the center so it could be the reason

the seventh comment up from this one is false all you need is light, which the moon provides, because technically moonlight is reflected sunlight
