📅This fact may be outdated
The Cuddle Mattress (also called Love Mattress) was a real product designed by Mehdi Mojtabavi in 2007 that won the Red Dot Design Award. It featured slitted foam sections allowing couples to slip their arms between slats while cuddling. However, as of 2021, Cuddle no longer sells mattresses. Alternative products like the SONU Sleep System now exist with similar arm-slot features.
There's a love mattress that is specifically designed for couples who sleep on each other's arms.
The Cuddle Mattress Had Slots For Your Snuggling Arms
If you've ever spooned with a partner overnight, you know the inevitable dilemma: where does the bottom arm go? Under their neck, you lose circulation within minutes. Over their side feels awkward. The answer seemed to be "suffer through it"—until designer Mehdi Mojtabavi had a better idea.
In 2007, Mojtabavi created the Cuddle Mattress (also marketed as the Love Mattress), a revolutionary sleep surface that literally had slots for your limbs. Instead of one solid piece of foam, the mattress consisted of flexible strips separated by gaps. When you wanted to wrap your arm around your partner, you simply slipped it between two slats. Your arm rested comfortably in the gap while your partner laid flat on the surface above.
Award-Winning Design That Solved Real Problems
The concept won the Red Dot Design Award in 2007, one of the most prestigious international design competitions. And it wasn't just clever—it was practical. The slits flexed open or closed depending on how you positioned yourself, accommodating different body types and sleeping positions. Beyond cuddling, the design also promoted better spinal alignment compared to traditional mattresses.
When it finally hit the market, the Cuddle Mattress sold for $1,400-$1,800 and came with specially designed fitted sheets that worked with the slitted surface. The company offered worldwide free shipping, and couples who'd dealt with dead-arm syndrome for years finally had a solution.
What Happened to the Cuddle Mattress?
Here's the unfortunate part: as of 2021, Cuddle no longer sells mattresses. The original product is no longer available for purchase. The reasons for shutting down aren't publicly documented, but the concept proved that couples genuinely wanted better solutions for intimate sleeping positions.
The good news? Other companies noticed the demand. The SONU Sleep System now features a patented "Comfort Channel" that serves a similar purpose, allowing arms and shoulders to move freely within the mattress structure. There are also cuddle pillows with arm holes that offer a smaller-scale (and cheaper) alternative to the full mattress design.
So while you can't buy the original Cuddle Mattress anymore, Mojtabavi's 2007 innovation proved that "dead arm while cuddling" was a problem worth solving—and the market agreed.
